This year I am grateful to be celebrating 25 years as a wealth manager. As I look back on what these last 25 years have held for me, I am amazed at the friendships I have made, the opportunities that have presented themselves, and how privileged I feel to continue this exciting journey at Optivest Wealth Management.
When I started in this business back in 1992, the market was up for about eight years. I remember feeling excited about what a great business I was in; the market was earning over 20% per year! It was fulfilling knowing that I was helping so many people secure their financial future.
Then, we hit a major recession in 2000. I’m sure you still remember that time as well. The market recovered in 2003, but again we hit another recession in 2008. So the road has certainly not been smooth, but there were two important things that stand out to me as powerful learnings during these tough times of market volatility.
First, communication was critically important. It was important to let clients know that I was still there, taking care of them and not hiding my head in the sand!
Discipline was equally important, specifically in regards to an investment strategy. It was imperative during this time for me to eliminate, or at least reduce destructive investor behavior. People tend to get panicky during recessions, and make bad decisions, so keeping an investment strategy in front of my clients was hugely important. We held the course, making sure accounts were properly allocated and rebalancing as needed.
One of the most memorable client stories happened last year when my clients/friends sold their company for a handsome sum. Back in 1995, they came to me as new clients (there were five partners). As small business owners, they wanted me to help them do some small investing and handle some employee benefits for their company.
As time went on, we did more investing and more planning. Now that they have sold their business, I manage that handsome sum of money for them. I’m very proud and so happy for them and what they have accomplished over these last 22 years!
There are two other major milestones and career achievements that stand out for me over the last 25 years. One is obtaining my certifications: I obtained my CFP® (Certified Financial Planner) certification in 1998, and my CDFA® (Certified Divorce Financial Analyst) certificationin 2015.
The other achievement is becoming a partner at Optivest Wealth Management. I am extremely proud to be a partner in such a highly regarded wealth management firm. Not only do I love what the firm stands for, their philosophies and the amazing team I work with, I’m excited about my ability to help steer Optivest and my clients into a wonderful future.
Thanks to all my clients, friends, colleagues and family for an outstanding 25 years; here’s to many more!!
