There is no time like the present to take inventory of what works, what doesn’t and what can be improved upon. My top three areas I choose to invest in help me stay focused, driven and inspired to persevere as a father, husband, and entrepreneur.

Throughout my childhood and into my teens, all I did was surf. By the time I got my first job out of college, I was only able to surf on weekends. Meaning, if there was no waves, I would have no exercise. I quickly realized that like life, waves can be inconsistent, so I started to explore gym workouts.

I was hooked instantly, and have now been working out 6 days per week for 34 years! Over time, I have discovered what works best for me and my body. My workouts start with 20-30 minutes of cardio exercise followed by 60-75 minutes of weight resistance training, followed by 5-10 minutes of abdominal work and stretching. Keep in mind, everyone’s body and goals are different, but this program works for me.

With working out so focused in the gym, I quickly realized the importance of proper nutrition to recover, build muscle and maintain what I was working so hard for. Everyone needs a different recipe for their individual daily nutrition intake, however for me, that is a caloric intake of 2500- 3000 calories per day, 6 meals per day, and with a macro nutrient breakdown of approximately 50% protein, 25% Carbohydrates and 25% good fats.

Proper nutrition also encompasses the necessity of quality of food. First, it’s best to consume minimal to no processed food. Second, whenever possible, Organic, GMO Free, Grass Fed and Free Range are the best options. My wife constantly tells me we can pay more now for the more expensive food or pay much more later with poor health.

I like to invest in good wine. Now, that does not necessarily mean expensive wine. It means wine that I enjoy. I enjoy Champagne…a lot! However, if I don’t feel like spending a lot, I might grab a bottle of Cava (from Spain) or Cremant (from France, made in the traditional style of Champagne, but produced outside of the Champagne region).

I also like to invest in refined wine stemware (don’t laugh). Riedell is famous for creating wine glasses specific to the varietal. I was not a believer at first. But after several blind tastings it really does matter. In short, life is too short to drink bad wine.
